Madeleine hated her nose. It was big and pointed and, because of her poor diet (her grandmother said), often spotted. Her little sister, Ariel, had a cute little button of a nose, a nose that inspired exclamations of “Oh, what a cute little button of a nose!” from any who saw it.

Next to her nose, Madeleine hated most her tail. She always had Flaky Scale Rash, which was very unbecoming in a female teenage mermaid. When she turned fifteen and was first allowed to visit the surface world, she tried to hide her flaky scales with strategically placed oysters. But it didn’t matter, because there were no ships or sailors around. There were only huge mountains of jagged blue ice, which Madeleine would have thought beautiful had she not been on the lookout for ships and sailors. On that first trip, Madeleine hauled herself up onto the nearest mountain of jagged blue ice and let the wind play with her hair, which was her best feature. But all the ships that passed through would sail by quickly, steering as far from the icebergs as they could. She sighed, knowing that sailors probably liked only the girls with cute little buttons of a nose.
