It is believed that gryphons build their aeries out of the gold they find hidden deep in
the mountains.

This is absurd.

Gryphons are not miners. They do not go traipsing around mountain ranges, waving pickaxes and wearing those hard hats with the little light attached to the front.

No, the gryphon is an aristocratic creature, one not readily given to situations that may lead to the Black Lung. They do have an innate love of gold, mostly, scholars reason, because they seem to be a very vain species and the gold highlights their iridescent skin tone rather smashingly.

How, then, do gryphons satisfy their hunger for shiny matching accessories? Simple. Gryphons strike at teatime, mainly at the higher end tea rooms where the carat count
is heavier.

This is the origin of the gryphonic crest. At some point, tea room owners became quite exasperated by the many gryphons pillaging their customers’ gold. After much hard-pressed negotiation, they struck a deal, wherein the tea rooms would pay a regular gold tax to the gryphons in exchange for being left alone. These establishments would then fly a shield with an image of the gryphon on it, to show that they were paid up in full. However, not all tea rooms were so prudent, leading to the popularity of the cry, “Hark the herald!” in such places whenever a gryphon would show up to demand its missing payment. It is said that if you shout this in a crowded room, a certain class of tea-loving old biddies will still dive to the ground, hiding their jewelry in whatever crevice most readily presents itself.
