16.16: OLPC Laptop with T-Mobile HotSpot Deal

NIDA: Here at the GO, we like to do good work. And we appreciate when others do good as well.

20.37: Coming Soon. Check Your Local Listings.

NIDA: "We should have a party," said one intrepid Unit member. "We should do something good and give back to the community," said another, more community-minded Unit member. "I love the Grey Album," said a third, who was more interested in her music library than the meeting at hand.

"We should have a party that does good and gives back!" came the thunderbolt, as a light bulb flashed over the first two. "And we'll play the Grey Album!" cried the third, not to be outdone.

14.30: Eating Pie Elsewhere

NIDA: A friend of mine is participating in National Blog Posting Month, and you woud think that would help inspire me to write my own blog entry every day. Alas, no. I might do a daily crossword puzzle or start calling people "cards" on Rose's behalf, but a daily blog entry!? PShaw! Unfortunately, I am too busy immersing myself in the Great Hustle and planning a Spectacularma Eventathon of Physical Stamina, Creativity, and Do Gooding. Plus, I thought I might tryNaNoWriMo this year. I've only got 49,500 words to go.

See you again at 20,000 words.

NICK: ‘Tis the season for giving. Some creative firms have designathons to give back to their communities. Some hold designoramas. GO, the international design unit in downtown Lancaster, believes in going the whole hog. On November 27 and 29, GO will host its first ever Design-O-Rama-Thon, a pro bono marathon design session to benefit not-for-profit organizations in Central Pennsylvania.

Any 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in the Central Pennsylvania region is eligible to participate in GO’s Design-O-Rama-Thon 2007. All design consultation and work will be provided free of charge. The event is organized into two 12-hour sessions. The first session, the Design-O-Rama half, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and will last from 9am to 9pm. On this day, area nonprofits can schedule a meeting with GO to discuss their marketing objectives and project ideas. Projects can cover anything design-related but are limited to those that can be completed within a 12-hour timeframe. The real work comes on Thursday, Nov. 29, the Design-A-Thon part, when GO’s creative team and other volunteer graphic designers and writers will roll up their sleeves and bunker down at GO headquarters for 12 straight hours of designing. The intervening time between the Design-O-Rama and the Design-A-Thon, Wednesday, will be spent gathering materials, such as logo files, photography, images, and other content, necessary for the designing to begin on Thursday.

We believe in doing good work,” says Jeronimo Herrera, GO creative director. “And we wanted to do something for those who do good.”

GO, LLC, is a multidisciplinary design unit in downtown Lancaster, PA. The firm has worked locally with the Lancaster Arts Hotel, the AIDS Community Alliance, and L.I.V.E (Lancaster Investment in a Vibrant Economy). Though nothing like Design-O-Rama-Thon has been held in the area recently, similar events take place in other cities around the country. GO is currently looking for sponsors who are willing to donate reduced or pro bono printing services and/or refreshments to keep volunteers perky and percolating with ideas. Contact us to schedule a Design-O-Rama meeting—slots for Nov. 27 are limited and are first come, first served.

12.29: Electro-Static Countdown - 1 DAY!

NIDA: The clock is ticking away! Well, it would be ticking if we had splurged on that huge beast of a chronograph when we went to IKEA. At any rate, the seconds are slipping away and we are in serious training. We've been practicing the whole sleeve rolling up (buttoned and unbuttoned, thick sleeves, thin sleeves, layered sleeves, etc) thing and while there have been a few injuries (who knew about repetitive stress?), we think we've got it down. Today we've got some prep work to do, a little housekeeping (ok, a lot), and some crazy carb loading.

Stress Level: Yellow (Elevated) - Accelerated speech patterns, obsessive to-do listmaking, increased caffeine consumption.

11.18: Live from Design-O-Rama-Thon!

Hello, Interwebs! We are coming to you live from the one and only "Inaugural Marathon Mash Up of Design and Do-Goodery"!

NIDA: I thought I may try to live blog our day and let all you cybertribes know what's going on here at GO Headquarters. I had planned on starting from the very beginning of the day, but apparently I only move at quarter-speed on four hours of sleep, so it's taken me this long (11ish) to get rolling. That and my typing rate is slowed significantly by the sleep-deprived/caffeine-boosted jitters I've got going on. But let's move on to the main event....

11.26: We have 4 volunteers stationed around the room, designing their hearts out. You'd think that there would be a lot of noise and activity and talking, but all you can hear is the sound of mouse clicks, keyboard tapping and the occasional yawn (from me).

I should give a shoutout to our lovely sponsors, who are helping us make this happen. Especially the local businesses who were kind enough to donate food and drinks and keep everyone's blood sugar levels up.

Thank you to:

  • Cross Keys Coffee and Teas on Queen St, for keeping everyone caffeinated and alert
  • Dosie Dough's for providing bagels and pastries (and for delivering it with a smile!)
  • The Family Center of Gap, also participating as a client, for their wonderful blueberry coffee cake and coffee
  • Ric's Bread for 2 dozen of the biggest, freshest, best-looking muffins
  • La Cocina on King St, they recently opened but were kind enough to give us 8 pounds of the Best. Rice. Ever.
  • Characters Pub, right next door, for their delicious ginormous sandwiches and what appear to be homemade chips (which have ruined every other chip for me). For some reason, roast beef always sticks in my teeth. Does anyone else have that problem? Is it just me?
  • Kitchen Kettle Village provided 3 dozen of the Best. Cookies. Ever.
  • and the wonderful people providing discounted services, Velocity Color and Penn, Inc.

12.03: One project down, 15 more to go! We took a short break around 11.34 to regroup and touch base and grab a bite to eat. I think I need to top off my coffee cup.

13.00: I've switched to yerba mate. All the caffeine, none of the side effects. If it was good enough for Che Guevera, it's good enough for me. Right now people are working on a brochure for Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster, an event logo for The Arc of Lancaster County, a strategic plan brochure for the Mayor's Office of Special Events, a 30-second commercial for United Disabilities Services, a fundraising invitation for The Janus School, and a logo and website for Team American Spirit's annual American Spirit Parade. Which is at least a week's worth of work for us normally so this is awesome.

14.00: We are running out of chairs! Though we have plenty of wonderful pastries and baked goods. Yum.

16.45: Sadly, our first wave of wonderful volunteers have come and gone, leaving behind a wake of wicked work. (Normally I don't approve of the use of "wicked" as a synonym for "cool" or "great" or "awesome", but I suppose exceptions can be made for today.) The good news is that we are on our 2nd and the start of our third waves, so things are trucking along! We have 5 projects in the bag, with 2-3 more to be completed shortly, so things are looking good. I've got to go make a pizza run, so back in a jiff.

17.35: Can I tell you how much I love Dominion Pizza at Columbia Avenue (717.481.5544)? Because I do, oh so very much. Mike and George and their people over there are good people. And they have the Best. Turkey Sub. Ever.

18.10: Seriously, have I mentioned how great Dominion Pizza is? Darn good pizza. I realize that I'm using a lot of the "Best. Stuff. Ever." and I'm not just saying that because of each business's generous support of our event. We are extremely fortunate and grateful that the businesses that have donated their goods to us are also very good at what they do. It's all coming together. Everything is lining up lemons!

21.15: We are down to our last few projects. I think most of our volunteers should be wrapping up pretty soon, so spirits are still pretty good. I think. I don't know. It's hard to string one second together with the next. My life has turned into that movie with the polaroids. Do you know what else is awesome besides Ric's Breads muffins, Crosskeys coffee, The Family Center of Gap's blueberry coffee cake, Dosie Dough's pastries, Kitchen Kettle cookies, La Cocina rice, and Dominion pizza? Polaroids. Specifically old school Polaroids that take 80-series film. Priceless. Or at least they would be if Polaroid didn't stop making the film, thereby boosting the price of a each pack of film to at least a double sawbuck.

22.00: We are just about done. Have a good night. Thank you to all our volunteers: Julie, Josh, Jenni, Sharyn, Chet, Melissa, Jackie, Tim, Dan, and Ron. Oh, and Christian, kind of.

End transmission.
